hapé & sananga

Hapé (pronounced hah-pay) or rapé and sananga (pronounced sah-nahn-gah) are traditional Amazonian plant preparations used by Indigenous communities in ceremonial, spiritual, and wellness practices. Both have long histories connected to cleansing, grounding, focus, prayer, connection, and spiritual practice, and play significant roles in Indigenous traditions. They symbolize a connection to nature, purification, and spiritual growth and are often used in conjunction with other treatments such as Kambo or Ayahuasca.

What is Hapé?

Hapé (Rapé) is a finely ground powder traditionally made from a combination of plants, often including strong varieties of tobacco (Nicotiana rustica). It is administered through the nostrils using a kuripe for self-administration or a tepi when served by another person.

People may seek Hapé as part of practices involving grounding and centering, mental clarity and focus, meditation or prayer, emotional or energetic cleansing, and spiritual connection.

Hapé is not psychedelic. The experience is generally brief but can be physically intense, particularly for someone experiencing it for the first time.

What is Sananga?

Sananga is made from plants in the Tabernaemontana genus and administered as drops directly into the eyes.

Traditionally, Sananga has been associated with focus, clarity, cleansing, and preparation for hunting and ceremonial practices. Today, people may also incorporate it into personal spiritual or wellness practices.

Sananga is not psychedelic, but application produces an intense burning or stinging sensation that typically subsides relatively quickly.

What to Expect

Sessions begin with a brief conversation about your intentions, experience, and any relevant health considerations. Depending on the session, hapé or sananga may be offered individually or together, with time provided afterward for rest, grounding, reflection, and integration.

safety

Hapé and sananga are not well-suited for everyone. Screening is required before your first session, and you should disclose health conditions, medications, pregnancy, eye conditions or procedures, and other relevant medical history.

Many hapé blends contain tobacco and nicotine. Sananga is applied directly to the eyes and should not be used casually or without proper screening and preparation.

These practices are offered for spiritual and wellness purposes and are not substitutes for medical or mental health care.

Respect for tradition

My practice approaches hapé and sananga with respect for the plants, their Indigenous origins, traditional uses, the land from which they originate, and the communities that have maintained relationships with these plants for generations. They are gifts from Pachamama (Mother Earth) and should not be approached casually or for recreational purposes.
